Amal Abdel-Hakim, a 16-year-old Palestinian-Australian, is about to begin Year 11. Suddenly she decides to take a big step and wear the hijab.

Ever wondered what it's like to wear the hijab? "Nappy-head", "tea-towel head" and "camel jockey" are just some of the slurs that Amal has to contend with. But underneath the hijab she is still your typical teenager; she faces the dilemma of combating unwanted spots, dealing with silly boys, bitchy class mates and love-sick, weight obsessed friends. And to top it off by wearing the hijab she attracts much unwanted attention. She knew the decision would be difficult, but who would think a piece of material could cause so much fuss?

Does My Head Look Big in This? is almost a handbook for non-Muslims to understand the trials and tribulations of young Muslims coming to terms with their faith.
The author says she wrote the book based on personal experiences. During high school she made the decision to stop wearing the hijab. "I have done more without the hijab on because I have had more opportunities," she explains.

The novel is light and witty without being too preachy, giving many young Muslim women the courage to wear their hijab and ignore hostility with their heads held high.
In another way it is simply your average teen read with that little extra. By the end of the book the reader has shared Amal's experiences and is left just as wise and mature.
